Market News & Headlines >> Trump USTR Pick Adds to China Ag Trade Worries

President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to be U.S. trade representative spurred some fresh concerns in agricultural markets about Chinese demand on Tuesday.

Trump tapped Robert Lighthizer, a critic of China’s trade practices and backer of some protectionist policies, for the USTR post.

How much influence Lighthizer will have in the Trump administration is uncertain with Trump appointing Peter Navarro to head a newly-formed White House National Trade Council and also naming his company’s top lawyer, Jason Greenblatt as a “special negotiator” for trade deals.

Lighthizer is a trade veteran, having served as deputy USTR under President Ronald Reagan, but that was his last government post.
